A weekly stop of records

Ten minutes on the same morning keep payments, costs and set-aside from sliding.

A hook holds the board for the length of the cut. After the saw stops, the piece still has to be marked. Side work without a weekly record is a cut with no pencil line: payments land, costs hide in a card statement, and the tax pocket is whatever is left on a tired Sunday. The hours may have had a stop. The money did not.

Bench Hook keeps the record on the same Saturday morning block that holds the hours. Ten minutes is enough when the sheet is always the same. Money in. Costs out. Tax set-aside moved to a separate pocket. Hours actually used, including unpaid admin. One page — paper or a single file — is the hook. A new app every month is not a stop; it is another board walking the bench.

Skipped weeks are how the record slides. A payment that was “obvious” in April is a mystery in August. A tool bought for one job looks like income until it is written as a cost. The point of the Saturday stop is not a perfect ledger. It is a line that can still be read when the day job is heavy and memory is not. If the sheet is blank, the hook is empty, even if work was done.

The record also shows whether the written hour stop and the real rate are still true. Hours creeping past the Saturday block, or a remainder that no longer covers the tax pocket, are signals to move dates or to decline the next similar job. The sheet does not argue. It sits against the bench. A qualified accountant should be asked when the numbers start to matter for tax or for a contract. This desk does not file returns and does not keep anyone’s books.

What the Saturday sheet holds

  • Payments received, with the date and the source.
  • Costs for the week, including small tools and platform fees.
  • The amount moved to a tax pocket, and the hours actually used.
